The usefulness of a digital tape measure app

Having an application that allows you to measure distances using just your cell phone can be extremely practical.

With it, you can help with choosing furniture, renovations or even more technical work, such as architecture and interior design.

The ease of using just your smartphone, without the need to carry a physical tape measure, makes these apps an interesting alternative for a variety of situations.

These apps work with augmented reality (AR) technology and the phone's internal sensors to calculate distances.

This means that anyone can take measurements quickly, without needing technical knowledge.

Test with two digital tape measure apps

To evaluate the efficiency of these applications, I tested two of the most popular ones available on the Play Store and the App Store:

  1. Measure (Google)
  2. AR Plan 3D

Below, I share my experience with each of them, highlighting the positive and negative points and whether they are free or paid.

Measure (Google)

At first I tested Measure, developed by Google.

It is already integrated into some of the latest Android phones and is quite intuitive to use.

Simply point your phone's camera at an object or surface and mark the measurement points on the screen.

Highlights:

  • Simple and easy to use interface.
  • It works well for basic measurements of furniture and medium-sized objects.
  • Completely free application.
  • Measure height, width and flat surfaces with ease.

Negative points:

  • Only available for ARCore compatible phones.
  • May be inaccurate on uneven surfaces or in low light.

Overall, Measure is an excellent option for anyone who has a compatible cell phone and needs a quick and practical measuring tool.

AR Plan 3D

Next I tested AR Plan 3D, which stands out for offering more features, such as three-dimensional measurements and creating floor plans.

Highlights:

  • It allows you to measure not only distances, but also heights and angles.
  • Generates floor plans from measurements.
  • Intuitive and modern interface.
  • Works on more devices, without the need for ARCore.

Negative points:

  • Some advanced features are only available in the paid version.
  • It may require a little initial learning to use all the features correctly.

AR Plan 3D proved to be more complete than Measure, but some features are blocked in the free version.

For those looking for something more advanced, it may be worth investing in the premium version.

Which app to choose?

Anyway, I tested some cell phone tape measure apps digital tape measure and I was surprised by how practical it was.

Google's Measure is very simple and works well for quick measurements. AR Plan 3D has more features, but some functions are paid.

But, in everyday life, having an app like this on your cell phone makes a big difference and avoids problems when measuring any space.

So after using it, I saw how useful it is! So if you haven't tried it yet, I recommend downloading it and giving it a try.
